The Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW) program, by ProsoftTraining, is an increasingly popular alternative for individuals seeking to credential or expand their Internet related expertise. To date more than 25,000 CIW titles have been earned.

The CIW program consists of three levels - Associate, Professional, and Master. Passing the foundations exam earns associate level. Candidates then select from four Master level tracks - either Master CIW Administrator, Master CIW Designer, Master CIW Enterprise Developer, or Master CIW Web Site Manager. Passing the first exam on the chosen track earns the CIW Professional level, and passing all of them achieves the title Master CIW.

E-commerce is a hot topic, and authors Chris and Margaret Minnick have chosen the CIW - E-commerce exam (part of the CIW Designer track) as the subject of their new book, CIW E-commerce Designer Certification Bible.

GoCertify: What does the CIW-Ecommerce Professional certify?
Margaret Minnick: The exam certifies a broad base of general knowledge related to developing and managing an e-commerce web site. It covers both technical and non-technical topics.

GoCertify: Who might benefit from earning a CIW designation?
Margaret Minnick: A web programmer who wants to move into e-commerce specifically, or into a managerial role, or a manager who wants to make the switch to e-commerce management.
Chris Minnick: Really, any professional who wants to certify their ability to grasp both the big picture of e-commerce and the nitty-gritty technical issues.

GoCertify: What technologies/knowledge areas are specifically tested on this exam?
Chris Minnick: The CIW E-Commerce Designer exam focuses on standards, technologies and practices for both B2B (business to business) and B2C (business to consumer) e-commerce models. It tests knowledge of the issues relating to marketing, promotion, customer service, user interaction, purchasing methods, secure transactions, payment gateways, inventory control, shipping and order information and site performance testing and evaluation.
