Editorial Review:

Product Description:
This text on Oracle 7 focuses on what a developer really needs to know in order to effectively produce a complete application without sacrificing performance, portability or concurrency. The book offers step-by-step tutorials for each tool in the Oracle Developer/2000 development suite. Providing a holistic approach, it addresses GUI design principles and code and illustrates all the elements of Oracle Developer/2000 by building fully-functional applications and a toolkit of reusable components. Common pitfalls and traps are discussed in detail and the book is supported by a wealth of real-world examples. An accompanying disk contains all the code samples used in the book, plus the toolkit of reusable components.

Amazon.com Review:
Oracle Developer/2000 is a well-known tool for serious corporate development, but it doesn't come with much printed documentation. Michael Stowe's Oracle Developer/2000 Handbook provides a solid working introduction to programming in Oracle, along with some excellent real-world expertise.

Early sections explore the strengths of the Oracle Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) on the back end, including stored procedures and triggers. The author describes how Oracle database servers can work with Web servers to deliver Developer/2000 applications in today's browsers (with certain limitations) through Java applets. He tours the basics of the Oracle Form Builder, from basic component types to PL/SQL, the language used to write code behind forms.

The guide continues with information on the Report Builder, which offers extensive support for the banding and grouping of data. (These reports can be delivered either in HTML or in Portable Document Format (PDF) from a Web server). This section follows up with data on Oracle Graphics, a graphics creation tool with extensive support for charting.

After a quick tour of several of the other Oracle Developer/2000 tools (such as Procedure, Project, and Query Builders), Stowe looks at designing database tables and data normalization. He offers some additional advice on coding conventions for PL/SQL and on how to design more effective user interfaces.

Later he demonstrates how to build a contact database front end using Oracle Forms, a nice hands-on exercise. (Walkthroughs are also provided for designing reports and graphical charts.) The book concludes with some guiding principles for Oracle project management. Appendices on the built-in functions that are available in a variety of Developer/2000 tools round up this book. --Richard Dragan
